05: Older Brother
Do You Believe In Love?
Who knew that this band would be legendary, in the end, for kindness? If you don’t know much about Huey Lewis and the News - I did not - go learn; it’s a great story. You can start with Pete Holmes’ interview with Lewis.
I am not a big Huey Lewis fan - they might have actually been my first instance of “liking their old stuff better,” lol. In their heyday - 84, 85 - they were so ubiquitous that I still never need to hear it again. But the above song, from a couple years before, sounds to me like pure radio music. I love this song.
[NOTE: I had never seen this video until just now. I find a very large proportion of early 80s lyrical sentiments and videos really awful. Simply having the band ogle women was often enough, but when it wasn’t, she could be asleep, draped in silk, hair and makeup done. I like the expression on Huey’s face during this section - uncomfortable and stiff. Ending’s kinda funny.]
BY THE WAY - I found these “Leave a comment” buttons, and I mean it honestly: savage this music or this strip! Share your embarrassment! Share your stupid stories! Bring it!
Older Brother - Bob Wiseman (1988)
I want to share this, despite its tangential relation to the strip. It’s not a video - just a pic and the whole album - but its first song is the one I’m tryna share: Older Brother, by Bob Wiseman. This, as a little note to remind you that not all of the music in this comic/newsletter will be awful. The 80s had some fantastic music - it’s just not what I found first.
In Her Dream: Bob Wiseman Sings Wrench Tuttle was released in 1988, although I didn’t hear it till 2000. Wiseman was in the original Blue Rodeo lineup, and is an interesting solo musician. Read about Bob Wiseman here. And here. And here he is at Bandcamp.
And here’s him later on, singing with Mary Margaret O’Hara, another 80s wonder I found after the 80s.
Thanks for reading! If you dig it, share it. Free, cheap.
