The Devil and Daniel Mouse
Film by Nelvana, 1978
Daniel Mouse’s songs were sung by John Sebastian - who ALSO sang one of my OTHER favourite songs from the 70s (below). The clip below, I had not seen in years and years, and while watching it I had that feeling of crazy familiarity: when Jan’s “ooooh ooh ooh ooooh” comes in near the 1:00 mark, or when he swallows a bit of “you sold your soul for some rock and roll” - I know it in a way that I’ll likely never not know it. It clearly influenced me on a deep level. I still love a good drum-fill-into-third-verse. Once I saw Flaming Lips with Beck, and that fill made the whole show.
I don’t have much to say about the movie. It taught me about selling your soul to the Devil and the price of fame, which I have carefully avoided since, thank gawd. I remain a pretty poor guitar player, 30 years into it.
(Nelvana also did the animation that revealed Boba Fett to the universe, in that shitty SW Xmas Special. But honestly, who has mental room for Star Wars?
APPARENTLY, not seeing a movie for 30 years is better for the movie AND YOU than having the movie smashed into your face every moment of every day. I loved Star Wars MOST when people were NOT talking about it (1988-1994). Fuck Star Wars. Seriously, fuck off, Star Wars.)
Here’s an interesting and thorough podcast about The Devil and Daniel Mouse. Go listen if you love it so much.
Like I mentioned, John Sebastian sang my favourite Karaoke song, the song I think of often in my job with the Sweathogs. Speaking of which, they’re all losing their shit at this point in the COVID year. Tense and pissed off. If we could move “solving this and getting back to normal” UP a little, I would really appreciate it. I’m TIRED.
I still love my job.
And you for reading.
Peace out.
