Oh man -- I forgot about that cover of "Please, Please, Please"! That cover is what made me check out the Smiths in the first place. (I rewatched Ferris Bueller a couple of years after it came out and thought: I *must* know more about that song...)
I agree that the Smiths are often quite funny. What's amazing is how the humour is intermingled with genuine despair or anguish (examples: the line "And the pain was enough to make a shy, bald, Buddhist reflect and plan a mass murder" in "Stop Me if You Think You've Heard This One Before"; "I am the son and heir of a shyness that is criminally vulgar" from "How Soon Is Now?"; the entirety of "Girlfriend in a Coma").
